Settlers of Ohio:
A History of Service
to the Soul of the People

November 1- 30, 2015

Rev. Edward Dominic Fenwick, OP was the first priest to settle in the state of Ohio, and he became its first bishop. Fenwick brought with him a community of men, members of a now 800 year old religious community founded in Europe in 1216 known as the Dominicans. Fenwick and his community provided essential, early services to the citizens of Ohio to support the growing state. The first church was a log cabin at Somerset, Ohio, and the Dominicans settled in Cincinnati, Columbus, Youngstown, Somerset, and Zanesville and have served the citizens of the state of Ohio in parishes, schools and social services in these locations since the early nineteenth century.

The history is noteworthy: for years, Fenwick and the Dominicans were the only Catholic clergy in Ohio, and to this very day, the Dominican Province of Saint Joseph (of which Fenwick was the founder) is one of the oldest and fastest growing men’s religious communities in Ohio and in the United States of America.

Beginning in November of 2015, the Dominicans worldwide will celebrate the 800th anniversary of our establishment, linking the state of Ohio to an 800 year old institution.

The exhibit focuses on history and service for the flourishing of all citizens and the common good.
